On May 30, 2024, an extended off-site meeting was held with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine. The event took place within the framework of a Swedish Government-funded project assessing environmental damage caused by the war.

 

Acting Head of the State Environmental Inspectorate Ihor Zubovych opened the meeting, expressing gratitude to local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and international partners for their ongoing cooperation. He also emphasized the need for reforming the state environmental supervision (control) system in Ukraine.

 

The meeting featured speeches by the First Deputy Head of the Chernivtsi Regional Military Administration Alona Atamaniuk, Head of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office of the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor’s Office Oleksandr Kyryk, Acting Head of the UNDP project assessing war-related environmental damage Oleksii Pyrikov, and representative of GreenUnity Ukraine Oleh Salo.

 

The consequences of the war for Ukraine’s environment, the damage caused by the Russian Federation’s aggression, the effectiveness of the State Environmental Inspectorate’s territorial bodies in the field of environmental protection and state market supervision, as well as interaction with law enforcement agencies regarding compensation for environmental damages in criminal proceedings for 2023-2024, were discussed.
